Startled, Ava stopped swinging her legs and looked up at the doctor, her eyes widening in surprise. A smile slowly spread across her face. "Hi Dr. Griffin," she said, waving. But her gaze quickly shifted to another girl about her age, who stood behind the doctor. This girl had golden blonde hair that reminded Ava of sunshine and bright blue eyes that made her think of the sky and oceans she had seen in books.
Ava, an orphan whose mother had died during childbirth and whose father had passed away in an accident when she was six, had never truly understood love. Though she had read fairy tales that talked about it, love often seemed confusing and selfish. Yet, as she looked at the blonde girl, something unusual stirred within her.
She placed a hand on her chest. "Dr. Griffin...," she murmured.
"What's wrong, honey? Are you okay? Does your chest hurt?" Abby asked as she approached the bed.
Ava frowned, biting her bottom lip. She glanced at the blonde girl. "It... it beats fast when I look at her." She nodded slowly. "Is something wrong with me?" Her eyes began to water.
