            「  why you ? that’s a very rhetorical question , you know why . 」he needed the firepower , and a company that didn’t follow laws . he wasn’t going to risk ghouls going into the crossfire , not when his group was small . yes , there were other people he could go to , but even with the competition , there was a clear answer as to which company provided the best service .
            「  trust me or don’t , just know i have the funds to pay you and it’s more than enough . . 」he cracked his index with his thumb as he thought over his options , his kagune retreating into his body , a show of good will . humans were always fickle , kaneki would know , he used to be one himself , but this was another level of stubbornness . still , his demeanor was calm , and his one visible eye wasn’t giving away any of his frustrations .

            「  never said you were low level , just that there’s a shared goal . 」although yes , in a way , kaneki was insinuating that the shadow company in question had methods some would deem desperate . 
            「 the fact that you don’t know proves that the ones around here are good at hiding , it’s not the same overseas . 」ghouls were constantly being hunted in japan , so much so that even the best disguised could be snuffed out , kaneki was almost jealous . . he’d need to ask around for more information , if anything to keep touka and the others safe .

            now working as the shadow company’s commander , graves isn’t afraid to push the line when it comes to getting shit done .  his team often acting as air support to aid task 141 , and being allowed to get away with shit most military contractors could only dream of .  often remaining at shepard’s side like the ever loyal lap dog , but even graves isn’t afraid to give his mind .  doesn’t like being backed into a corner , he isn’t one to take lightly .  graves remained 141’s ally alongside los vaqueros until the betrayal back at las almas in 2022 since both teams were getting too close about discovering what exactly happened to those missiles and how they gotten into hassan’s hand .  eventually enacting their revenge plan , exploding the tank he was in .  little did they know..  HE WASN’T IN THAT TANK .

            phillip john graves grew up in a rural town located in ███ , texas .  he had a fairly normal childhood with decent parents and since being an only child a lot of attention .  sometimes too much attention .  wasn’t long after finishing college he fulfilled his dreams of joining the military as his father and grandfather once did , serving as a operator in the marsoc raiders— the marines .  in his time of service , graves slowly started to feel restrained .  unable to really push himself and his men to the limits..  their truest potential .  due to this constriction he would remove the uniform that bounded him in 2017 , leading onwards to form a better team .  a company .  one of his own image , one of which didn’t have the limitations of his former enlistment as a marines .  where he’d make the rules instead of abiding to others ,  and then it was deemed the name that would stick forever..  SHADOW COMPANY .
